Having a flat and tight stomach can be difficult to achieve. As much as we’d all like a slim and toned belly, many factors such as lifestyle, diet, and various health conditions make it challenging to achieve this goal. However, with the advent of medical technology, this is no longer an unattainable dream.

One such increasingly popular surgical option is the belt lipectomy. Read on to learn everything you need to know about how belt lipectomy is used, who it’s suitable for, the associated risks and benefits, and more.

What is a Belt Lipectomy?

A belt lipectomy procedure is a type of lower body lift surgery in which excess fat from the waist area is removed and the skin is tightened. This gives your abdominal area a firm and toned appearance.1

A tummy tuck or an abdominoplasty is also a similar procedure for removing extra fat. However, it differs from a belt lipectomy in that it only removes fat from the frontal area, whereas a belt lipectomy involves all-around (or 360-degree) fat removal from the “belt area,” including the belly and back.2

How Does It Work and Who’s It For?

A belt lipectomy is ideal for you if you’ve lost a lot of weight recently and have a lot of loose skin around the waist area. This loose skin is unlikely to tighten on its own and requires surgical intervention. Additionally, if these loose skin folds are causing discomfort or other problems like swelling, rash, ulcers, difficulty walking or urinating, and hygiene challenges, you may want to consider a lower body lift.3

A belt lipectomy is performed under general anesthesia. During this procedure, the surgeon will make small cuts around the circumference of your abdomen and above the buttocks. Excess fat and tissue will be removed, and the muscles will be repaired. Finally, all the sagging, damaged skin will be removed, and the skin will be tightly attached from the bottom to the top of the incision. This will give a lift to your lower body and result in a toned and firm mid-section.4

What Are the Benefits and Risks of Belt Lipectomy?

An effective belt lipectomy can help you achieve the body you want and make you feel confident in the way you carry yourself.5

The risks of surgery are directly related to your age, weight, health status, and the amount of fat that needs to be removed. Some of the most common risks of belt lipectomy include:6

  • Heavy bleeding
  • Infection
  • Delayed wound healing or wound gaping/separation
  • Blood clots in your legs (deep vein thrombosis)
  • Numbness or nerve damage
  • Swelling (lymphedema)
  • Asymmetrical development
  • Anesthesia-related complications
  • Repeated loosening of the skin

Finally, the end result of your surgery may not turn out exactly as you hoped, which may require additional surgeries to fix. Also, you may have additional complications if you gain fat again. Be sure to clarify all your concerns with your surgeon before opting for this procedure.7

How Long Does Recovery Take?

Surgical recovery can take a few weeks. Make sure to keep your bandages dry and change them as required. Get plenty of rest, avoid smoking, swimming, exercise, bending, or heavy lifting, and maintain a healthy diet.8

Seek medical assistance immediately if you experience any serious symptoms like breathlessness, chest pain, infection, excessive pain, palpitations, and swelling in the legs or feet. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully for a speedy recovery.9
